The Vision
A climbing gym and specialty coffee shop brand exploring the intersection of physical craft and archival documentation. Benchmark treats routes and coffee as artifacts worth preserving, challenging the disposable, algorithmic aesthetic of modern fitness culture through deliberate design, analog textures, and institutional permanence.
The Strategy
To build a complete brand from the ground up, establishing every layer of identity from conceptual positioning to execution. The project began with defining "archival archaeology" as the core philosophy: treating climbing routes and coffee origins as physical artifacts worth cataloging and preserving. This concept informed naming, logo development, typography systems, color theory, and material choices across all touchpoints. Every element references USGS survey markers, 1970s climbing heritage, and specialty coffee documentation practices, establishing Benchmark as a third space where measurement, craft, and community coexist.
The Result
A brand identity system spanning comprehensive visual guidelines and designed applications across physical and digital touchpoints. Deliverables include a multi-layered logo system, merchandise, custom card systems, menu design, coffee packaging, signage, and event posters. The work demonstrates capacity to develop cohesive brand systems from initial concept through final execution while maintaining strategic coherence across dozens of applications.
